TrueMoneyGames offers a number of online backgammon games:
Single Games
In single backgammon games, the loser pays the winner the stake multiplied by the value of the cube. The price is further multiplied by two in case of a gammon loss or multiplied by three in case of a backgammon loss.
TrueMoneyGames uses the Jacoby rule for the money games tables.
- Jacoby rule - The Jacoby rule states that a gammon or a backgammon can only be scored if the cube has been turned by a player and taken by his opponent.
There are several additional rules which are often used in money play, but only if both players agree to do so
- Automatic doubles - These occur when both players roll the same number at the beginning of the game. The value of the doubling cube is doubled but the cube still stays in the center. If this happens another time in the same game it has no effect anymore. Automatic doubles count only once per game. Some players like to have some extra excitement. With this rule they randomly play some games for twice the initial stake.
- Beaver - If a player doubles and his opponent thinks he is the favorite in the game he may beaver the cube. This means that he accepts the double but takes the cube on twice the offered value. Effectively he doubles at the same time as he takes while keeping the cube ownership.
Table Stakes
TrueMoneyGames online backgammon games use the concept of 'Table Stakes' for the Signle Game tables. This concept is widely used in the gameof Poker and protects players to lose more than what they can afford.
Each player brings money to the backgammon table. The money at the table is the maximum that you can lose or win in a single game. For example you are playing €10 per point and you have €50 at the table. If you lose 8 points in the next game you only lose your €50. However, if you win 8 points you can only win €50. This makes it fair; if you have a lot of money at the table or only little, there is no advantage either way. Logically, if you have €50 at the table and your opponent has only €20, both players can only win or lose €20 in the next game. Always the lower amount of money counts for that.
Match Play
Match play is the style of competition used at tournaments. The winner of a backgammon match is the first player to accumulate an agreed number of points. Each game is worth the value of the cube multiplied by the type of win. Note that the final score is irrelevant, the only goal is accumulate at least the agreed number of points and so win the match.
The Jacoby rule, automatic doubles and beavers are not used in match play.
- Crawford rule - This rule states that if the first player reaches match-point (he needs only one more point to win the match) it is not allowed to use the doubling cube during the following game.
Jackpots
A jackpot is basically a knock-out backgammon tournament.
All jackpots have a number of participants that is a power of 2, i.e. the number of players can be 2, 4, 8, 16 and so on.
The players buy in for a certain stake and are then randomly paired with each other and play matches to a certain matchlength.
The winners of each round continue the tournament and are paired according to the drawsheet. This process keeps repeating until in the end the finals will be played between 2 players and the money will be assigned accordingly.
Tournaments
Backgammon tournaments are special jackpots. They start at a certain time and the registration is usually 30-60 minutes before the tournament starts.
If the number of participants is not a power of two (as it is for jackpots) byes are given to random players, which advance one round without playing.
Often added money is put to the prize pool of a tournament. This money comes from TrueMoneyGames in addition to the entry fees of the players.
